OMG! I thought I was the only human on earth who owned a copy of Gannon Blood Beast.
I first stumbled across this book in my mother’s collection of paperbacks along with some classic Stephen King and Dean Koontz and thinking it a horror novel, I read it. It was pretty horrific but not like I thought it would be.
I was 12 years old and utterly apalled. I have never read anything like it since. Not because I didn’t like it but because no other author came even close to writing anything like it, including Richard Kadrey and Mike Carey, both of who like to believe that they are pretty radical writers.
My Mom’s paperback collection is also where I first stumbled across The Destroyer series. I was totally addicted to this series and collected as many as I coud get my hands on but I only have the one Gannon book.
I’ve been searching out bizarre fantasy fiction ever since, from Storm Constantine to Gemma Files. I think this book also helped fuel my love of violent men’s adventure books by Barry Eisler and Robert Crais. (This has got to be part of the reason that I love Joe Pike.)
You’re fortunate because you at least get to talk about this with people. I have never been able to explain my love of trashy, violent fiction to anyone. Although if the high sales of those Urban Ghetto books are anything to go by, apparently I’m not alone in my tastes.
